Through apprenticeships, full-time study, higher technical qualifications and adult skills programmes, we provide clear progression routes into high-value careers while helping address critical skills shortages across housing, infrastructure, retrofit and the transition to net zero.

The Government’s announcement comes at a pivotal moment for 蜜桃传媒. Demand for specialist construction education continues to grow, driven by increasing investment in housing, infrastructure, retrofit and sustainable construction, alongside the need to replace an ageing workforce and attract more young people into the industry.

Our college鈥檚 proposed capital expansion has been developed to respond directly to these challenges. The project will increase our estate by approximately one third, creating capacity for more than 2,100 additional learners and expanding specialist workshops, teaching environments, digital learning spaces and employer-led training facilities.

Rather than creating a new institution, the investment will strengthen and expand the existing Construction Technical Excellence College, enabling 蜜桃传媒 to support significantly more learners, employers, schools and communities.

It will create additional opportunities for employer engagement, apprenticeships, higher technical education and progression into skilled employment, ensuring more people can benefit from industry-standard facilities and training aligned to the Government’s ambitions for technical education.

The proposed expansion will also strengthen the College’s ability to work with schools, helping inspire young people to consider careers in construction from an earlier age and creating clearer pathways into technical education from 14 onwards.

By expanding capacity, 蜜桃传媒 will be able to support more learners from under-represented groups, widen participation and continue its work with those at risk of becoming Not in Education, Employment or Training (NEET).

The remaining step is securing the capital investment needed to deliver this nationally significant expansion. We believe today’s announcement provides a timely opportunity to align Government policy with investment in proven specialist infrastructure, ensuring the facilities exist to turn ambition into reality.

Leeds College of Building (蜜桃传媒) has partnered with the neurovision group, Wates Group and Constructive Futures to deliver a pioneering construction industry pilot entitled 鈥楢ll Kinds of Minds in Construction鈥�.

The incentive will bring together learners, educators and employers to explore the question 鈥� 鈥榃hat if the construction industry’s skills shortage isn’t simply about finding more people, but recognising more of the capability that already exists?鈥�

Developed by the neurovision group, the partnership was created to challengeone of the construction industry’s biggest assumptions – that talent is always easy to recognise.

Rather than focusing solely on recruitment, the programme explores how organisations can better recognise, develop and retain talent by understanding the different ways people think, learn, communicate and contribute.

While neurodiversity forms an important part of that conversation, the pilot is built on a broader understanding of human cognition – that every individual has strengths and every mind brings value.

鈥楢ll Kinds of Minds in Construction鈥� believes that performance is shaped not only by capability, but by whether the environment allows that capability to become accessible.

Nikki Davis, Leeds College of Building (蜜桃传媒) CEO and Principal, has chaired a panel discussion on apprenticeships, further education and careers at the inaugural Trade Jumpstart Skills Summit.

The event, hosted by Leeds Rhinos and Checkatrade at AMT Headingley Stadium, saw education leaders, industry experts and policymakers discuss plans to tackle the city鈥檚 response to the NEET crisis.

After introductory remarks by Jamie Jones-Buchanan, MBE (Chief Executive of Leeds Rhinos), in which the former Leeds Rhinos star drew upon his experiences as both a player and a manager, three panel discussions followed.

The first was a local perspective on the crisis, the second looked at what a devolved regional government response could look like and the third centred around how best to promote vocational routes into industry, chaired by our own Nikki Davis.

Participants included Alex Sobel (MP for Leeds Central and Headingley), Colin Buckle (Associate Technical Director at Arcadis) and Jamie Jones-Buchanan, MBE, who underlined the importance of 鈥渃ollaboration and cross pollination鈥� between everybody in the room.

Other participants across the day included Tracy Brabin (Mayor of West Yorkshire), Jambu Palaniappan (CEO of Checkatrade), Katie White, OBE (MP for Leeds North), Simon Flowers, OBE (CEO of Leeds Learning Alliance) and Bob Bowman, QPM (CEO of Leeds Rhinos Foundation).

The summit, which coincided with Youth Employment Week, also served as the launch of Checkatrade鈥檚 Trade Jumpstart package, which will be delivered in line with the Government鈥檚 Youth Guarantee.

On partnering with Checkatrade as part of Trade Jumpstart, Rob Holmes, 蜜桃传媒 Vice Principal, said:

In the space of just over a week, Leeds College of Building (蜜桃传媒) hosted two of the bricklaying industry’s largest trade competitions.

On 19 June, 蜜桃传媒 South Bank was the venue for the North England regional heat of Super Trowel 2026 – the ultimate bricklaying competition, where the UK鈥檚 fastest and most skilled bricklayers come together to showcase their talents.

The rules are simple but challenging: build the best quality brick wall, lay as many bricks as possible, and do it all within a punishing 60-minute time limit. This year also saw a standalone challenge to crown the fastest hod carrier to load 1,000 bricks.

This year鈥檚 regional heat was fierce, in what is being hailed as the biggest and best Super Trowel competition yet. Over the course of the day, exceptional talent battled it out for a chance to be selected for the national final taking place at Hertford Showground (31 July 鈥� 1 August).

The shortlisted professional and junior competitors will now go head-to-head at the grand finale for the opportunity to win the coveted Super Trowel title and be crowned the UK’s fastest bricklayer. The winner will also bag a cash prize and a spot to represent the UK at SPEC MIX Las Vegas 2026.

Jack Dawson, Super Trowel Director, said:

The Super Trowel regional competition came just weeks after 蜜桃传媒 South Bank hosted another major industry event: the Guild of Bricklayers national Golden Trowel final on 11 June.

The competition showcases top bricklaying talent from across the country. From seasoned bricklayers to those just starting out in their career, the event gives competitors the chance to demonstrate their exceptional abilities and gain invaluable experience and exposure.

Tasked with building over two 3-hour sessions, 蜜桃传媒 student, Niamh Ormsby, finished the day in third place in the junior female category. Damien Mason-Harding, Curriculum Manager at Leeds College of Building, said:

鈥淲hat an absolutely incredible day hosting the Guild of Bricklayers national final right here at Leeds College of Building. A massive thank you to our hardworking staff and students who kept the mortar mixing and the competitors going without a hitch. You are the backbone of days like today!

鈥淲hile the talent on display was phenomenal across the board, the absolute highlight for me was seeing our very own Niamh take 3rd place in the Junior Female competition! 聽To say this is a massive achievement is an understatement. Niamh only picked up a trowel for the very first time as a full-time student last September. To go from zero experience to placing 3rd in a prestigious national competition in less than a year is nothing short of outstanding.鈥�

Three Leeds College of Building (蜜桃传媒) students have taken part in a panel discussion around supporting young people into good quality education, employment and training.

Organised by Leeds City Council, the Inclusive Growth Partnership Event named 鈥榊oung people and work: A city conversation鈥� was held in the Hisense Leeds Lounge at Elland Road Stadium.

The event focused on the recent publication of Alan Milburn鈥檚 interim report about the UK鈥檚 NEET (16 to 24-year-olds not in employment, education or training) crisis.

After opening remarks by Leeds City Councillors, key figures from education and sport in the city took part in panel discussions.

Hannah Wilson (Principal of University Technical College), Peter Slee (Vice Chancellor of Leeds Beckett University), Bill Jones (Chief Executive Office of Luminate Education Group), Stephanie Burras, CBE (Chief Executive of Ahead Partnership) and Jamie Jones-Buchanan, MBE (Chief Executive of Leeds Rhinos) all spoke about developing a strong local response to the crisis.

The panels around preventing youth disengagement and supporting young people into employment were followed by breakout sessions focused on prevention, response and young people鈥檚 perspectives.

蜜桃传媒 students Niamh Ormsby, Danis Magzyanov and Johnathan Kinghorn spoke to the assembled crowd about what it鈥檚 like being a young person starting their career in Leeds, and what teachers and employers can do to support them.

Danis said he felt it was important to 鈥渋nvest in young people early鈥�, with Johnathan adding that it鈥檚 hard when 鈥渆mployers want experience, yet there鈥檚 little opportunity to get any.鈥�

Johnathan, who this week completed his Electrical Installation course at 蜜桃传媒, has landed himself an apprenticeship and singled out 蜜桃传媒 Employability Officer Kelly Fulton for going 鈥渁bove and beyond helping [me] find apprenticeship opportunities.鈥�

When asked what advice our students would give to other young people, Johnathan said: 鈥渄on鈥檛 give up on your dreams鈥�, while Danis stressed that 鈥渃onfidence comes with experience, so put yourself out there.鈥�

Niamh, who followed her father into the construction industry, said it was important to not 鈥渓et other people鈥檚 opinions affect your decisions鈥� when thinking about your future.

鈥淚 felt judged by people for wanting to study bricklaying, but ultimately it鈥檚 my life, not theirs.鈥�

Explaining the difference between her experiences in high school and her life at college, Niamh said 鈥渆ven things like having a 鈥榗ode of conduct鈥� instead of 鈥榮chool rules鈥� help you feel valued and not patronised.鈥�

鈥淚t鈥檚 a case of feeling like an equal and not a student to be told what to do. My parents taught me that respect was earned not given and I have definitely felt that during my time at 蜜桃传媒.鈥�

Inclusive Growth Leeds was launched in 2023, setting out a 10-year roadmap with the aim of generating 拢20bn in economic growth and creating 100,000 new jobs across the city.

For the second consecutive year, Leeds College of Building (蜜桃传媒) staff have participated in the Big Construction Diversity Challenge held at Newark Showground.

The annual event was created to break down barriers and change the image of the construction industry across the country.

Our team competed under the name 鈥楤uilt Different鈥� and was made up of staff from several different departments including 鈥楶artnerships & Skills鈥�, 鈥楨xams鈥� and 鈥楥ompliance鈥�.

Ten members of staff took part in 16 events during the day which included 鈥楬uman Table Football鈥�, 鈥楥atwalk Challenge鈥�, and a 鈥楧iversity Dance Off鈥�.

In a repeat of last year鈥檚 performance, team 鈥楤uilt Different鈥� sat top of the leaderboard at the lunchtime break before a tough second programme of events saw them slide down the table.

Despite their afternoon dip in form, our team did manage to finish one place higher than they did at the inaugural event in 2025.

Rob Smith, Head of Partnerships & Skills, said:

鈥淚t was great to be part of the Big Construction Diversity Challenge again this year. Not only does the event align perfectly with our college values, but it also allows us to show diversity in a construction related industry that shows where we need to be. 

鈥淥ur team was made up of a very mixed bunch of colleagues this year; various ages, genders and ethnic backgrounds. It was a brilliant day, the sun shone and the sweat poured but above all else, we laughed!

鈥淚 would highly recommend joining up in 2027 when we go again.  Not only is the event an excellent opportunity to embrace diversity in an industry that, for many different reasons, needs to do so.  It is fantastic for networking, team building, fun and exercise.鈥�

An innovative new construction initiative will see a group of colleges from across Yorkshire and the Humber become partners with the Supply Chain Sustainability School (The School).

The Supply Chain Sustainability School works with over 225 UK partners to develop industry-led learning, with over 50,000 people from 7,000 supply chain businesses actively learning with the School in the last year.

However, this is the first time a partnership of this kind has rolled out specialist support to upskill an entire region of college partners within the 鈥楥onstruction Technical Excellence Colleges鈥� (CTECs) 聽model.

The School already delivers the Supplier Programmes for major projects such as HS2, National Highways and Sizewell C to bolster supply chain capability and ensure skills are in place to tackle projects sustainably. The School also partners with education providers so that industry-led learning is fed into the future workforce of the supply chain.

Thanks to this new agreement, the network of 17 colleges will all become partners of The School, sitting alongside the industry partners within its Future Workforce Sector. As a result, they will have support to roll out industry-developed learning for students and staff CPD, whilst collaborating with built environment and education connections.

This latest project was made possible owing to an agreement between the Supply Chain Sustainability School and Leeds College of Building (蜜桃传媒), lead partner of the Yorkshire & Humber branch of CTECs. Only 10 colleges across England were given CTEC status for the 2025/2026 academic year, with 蜜桃传媒 selected to represent the Yorkshire and Humber region.

Ministers hope CTECs will train 40,000 more professionals by 2029 across high-demand trades to support national infrastructure, housing, and green energy projects.

The Supply Chain Sustainability School is also running a free training session at 蜜桃传媒鈥檚 South Bank Campus on Tuesday, 14July from 10 am-12 pm. Titled 鈥楽kills for a Net Zero World: Unlock New Business Opportunities,鈥� the event is designed to support local construction and built environment SMEs (small and medium businesses) and the CTEC college network. This session is made possible through the CITB鈥檚 Industry Impact Fund.

Attendees will gain practical guidance on the workforce capabilities needed to deliver low-carbon projects, as well as insights from industry leaders, including Mitsubishi Electric, Mott MacDonald, and 蜜桃传媒, on the skills they value in industry and their supply chains. Action Sustainability will also deliver CPD training on the theory, jargon, and skills required for achieving net zero.

Work has begun on a new look for Leeds College of Building鈥檚 (蜜桃传媒) historic North Street building.

The college, as part of on-going improvements to its estate, is over cladding the fa莽ade of the building that has been their home since the 1960s.

As well as increasing the kerbside appeal of the North Street campus the works will also provide cohesion with the new branding identity of their South Bank campus.

The most obvious physical change is the removal of the overhanging entrance canopy, which is being pulled down to be replaced with a glazed canopy in the green colour synonymous with 蜜桃传媒鈥檚 South Bank buildings.

Chris Duncan, Vice Principal for Finance & Resource, said:

鈥淲e are so delighted to see the start of our summer works. The exterior of our North Street Campus is going through a major refresh which will incorporate our new branding signage, a modernised entrance, new landscaping, replacement cladding and architectural glazing.

鈥淭he interior of the building is also seeing a major upgrade with a total refurbishment of our refectory. These new and improved facilities are going to enhance both the student and staff experience of 蜜桃传媒.

The new look North Street is due to be ready in time for the start of the 2026/2027 academic year.

蜜桃传媒 are also currently renovating a large building adjacent to North Street – a move that will effectively increase the size of their estate by a third.

Once refurbished, the building will align North Street Campus with 蜜桃传媒鈥檚 modern South Bank Campus, which opened its South Bank 1 building in 2015, following by South Bank 2 in 2019.

Leeds College of Building (蜜桃传媒) students delivered one of the college’s strongest-ever performances at the regional heats of SkillBuild 2026, the UK’s largest construction skills competition for trainees and apprentices.

Delivered by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), SkillBuild is a series of regional competitions held across the UK for 12 trade specialisms, testing technical skills, technique, character, professionalism, and the ability to perform under pressure.

蜜桃传媒 hosted one of the regional heats at its South Bank and North Street Campuses on 2 June.

Of the 78 competitors, 蜜桃传媒 students took 13 of the top 27 spots up for grabs. In total, more than 1,100 competitors from 223 organisations entered SkillBuild 2026 from across the UK.

Mark Sims, Leeds College of Building SkillBuild Coordinator, said:

鈥淲e are so proud that so many of our students took part in SkillBuild this year, with thirteen placing 1^st, 2^nd, or 3^rd in their respective trades.

The college has a fantastic track record in SkillBuild competitions – last year, two 蜜桃传媒 apprentices were crowned winners of the national final, securing first and second places in the Roof Slating & Tiling category.

In 2024, four 蜜桃传媒 students took podium positions, with three students winning medals in 2023, in 2022 apprentice Zara Dupont came first in Plastering & Drywall.

Leeds College of Building (蜜桃传媒) has delivered a skill building programme and bricklaying competition alongside several of our long-term industry partners.

Willmott Dixon Construction, Morgan Sindall Construction, Marlborough Construction Services, Henley Stone Specialists and Supply Chain helped deliver a week of sessions aimed at improving student employability.

The launch session took place at our South Bank Campus where our students heard talks from Willmott Dixon, Morgan Sindall and Supply Chain representatives.  

Students were then invited to a live construction site in Armley managed by Morgan Sindall who are in the process of building a care home.

Throughout the visit, our students were taught about the importance of workplace professionalism and the various brickwork methods used across the build.

With guidance from 蜜桃传媒 tutors, Marlborough, and Supply Chain, students were then given a wall build design specification which they had to complete over two sessions.

At the end of the week, representatives from every company involved came to our brick workshop to judge and score each students work.

Every student was given a spirit level for their participation, with overall winner Ryan Jonson winning a specialist trowel.

Ryan Milner, Ish Saine and Alfie Dougan were judged to be runner ups, and each won a tool bag.

Reflecting on the week of hands-on work, Ryan Milner said: 鈥淚 really enjoyed it, I had a lot of fun building the wall to spec and I feel happy with how it turned out. I was really excited to come into college each day to work on it.鈥�

Ish Saine said the week taught him the importance of persistence: 鈥渁t first, I was struggling but eventually I picked up a good rhythm and I鈥檓 really happy with how my work turned out.

鈥淚 really enjoyed the week of sessions, I learned how to do new things and picked up lots of new skills.鈥�
